Established in 1898, Northampton Lumber Company is the oldest building
supply store still in operation on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The
business has evolved and changed with the times to meet its customers
needs and remains a mainstay in the community.
Originally, the company included its own steam driven sawmill.
Timber was hauled in by teams of mules to be milled on site. Throughout
the 20th century, the company performed a multitude of services. Northampton
Lumber manufactured wooden barrels and crates on premises to pack and
ship produce, hardware and a variety of other goods. After WWII, the
store sold a full line of GE appliances. From the mid-60's to 1981,
Northampton Lumber Company was a Boston Whaler boat dealer, including
a sales and service center for Mercury outboard motors.
Today the company carries on its tradition of exceptional service,
providing a full line of building materials, paint, and hardware.
